Title: Feedback Directed Optimization for OCaml
Speaker: Greta Yorsh

Overview:
OCamlFDO is a tool that uses information about frequently-executed program parts to guide compile-time optimization decisions. Code layout optimization is a classic example of why this information is useful, how hardware and compilers interact, and how (not to) measure performance. In this talk, we will explore the design of OCamlFDO and how it was influenced by practical needs to fit in with different built systems, developers' workflows, and the open-source compiler itself.

Speaker Bio:
Greta Yorsh works on OCaml compiler here at Jane Street, having previously worked on GCC compiler at ARM. She is passionate about low-level optimizations that present the combined challenges of ensuring correctness and achieving the best possible performance on modern hardware. She studied Computer Science at Tel Aviv University and has been involved in several academic and industrial research projects in the areas of software verification, program synthesis, and superoptimization.

Title: Algorithmic challenges in build systems and incremental computation
Speaker: Andrey Mokhov

Overview:
Build systems are used by every software developer on the planet, but they are far from being a solved problem. For years the venerable Make dominated, but more recently the challenges of scale have driven large software firms to develop their own build systems, such as Google's Bazel or Facebook's Buck. Jane Street is not as large, but we are not in exception; in fact, we developed not one, but two build systems! In this talk, you'll learn about the build system called Dune and about the incremental computation library that powers it. As an example of a tricky algorithmic problem that we recently needed to solve, we'll look at concurrent cycle detection in build graphs comprising millions of nodes.

Speaker bio:
Andrey Mokhov works in Jane Street's build systems team, trying to keep our build times under control despite the rapidly growing population of software developers. Before joining Jane Street, he was an academic researcher at Newcastle University (UK), working on asynchronous circuits, functional programming, and build systems.

CellaVision är F-sektionens huvudsamarbetspartner och på torsdag nästa vecka kommer Adam Morell, utvecklingschef på företaget och gammal F:are från 1998, att prata om hur CellaVisions system fungerar, samt hur de med hjälp av bildanalys och neurala nätverk förenklar och förbättrar sjukvården.

Jane Street will be hosting a virtual ESTIMATHON!

Register as an individual* here by Thursday September 30th 23:59 BST.

The Estimathon! is a mind bending mixture of math and trivia. In teams, you'll attempt 13 Fermi problems in 30 minutes, ranging from totally trivial to positively Putnamesque. Be prepared to come up with the best set of confidence intervals! Sample problems include:

How many stop signs are in New York City?
How many babies were born in 1900?
How many Social Security Numbers are prime?

We will also have time at the end of the Estimathon for a live Q&A session with Jane Street Traders, Software Engineers and Recruiters.

Typically when we come to campus, we bring swag. Since we can't meet in-person, we will provide guests access to order one of our 2020 t-shirts! More details will follow on this after the event :)

*Estimathon is a team-based competition. All participants will register as individuals and be placed on a team. But due to the logistics associated with running the event virtually, you cannot sign-up as a team.

Fyllnadsvalet för världsmästare och valet för utbytesrepresentant är nu öppna igen på grund av tidigare ansökande hoppade av. Det har dock redan hittats en ny kandidat till utbytesrepresentant så fyllnadsvalet för denna post stänger på lördag natt.

Den 28nde september smäller det och ingen mindre Peter Rung kommer till kåraulan för att föreläsa om macho-kultur och normer med ett fokus på universitetslivet och unga vuxna! ❤ Dra med alla dina vänner och ta en paus från plugget för att lära er något om ett ämne som är minst lika viktigt! ❤

Hi all guild members!

The Students’ Educational Council is back again with yet another election this time it is the election for Representative for the Exchange Students. Everybody at the guild can apply for this position, but it is strongly recommended that you are an exchange student yourself.

The Representative for the Exchange Students is to make sure that the Students’ Educational Council takes the special study conditions of the exchange students into consideration. The representative also takes part in discussions regarding matters relating to exchange students at the guild and is the contact person between the Students’ Educational Council and the exchange students. The term of this position is one semester. At the moment we have already received a candidate so the election will close in one week.
